Session Descriptions

Language Matters - NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness of Southwest Ohio)

Session 1, Session 2

Language Matters is a workshop designed by NAMI Southwest Ohio in collaboration with DEIBA Curriculum experts. This session explores the importance, impact, and experience of stigmatizing language & provides an immersive opportunity to practice preferred language and real-life scenarios. This program provides an evidence-based presentation by two trained facilitators, exploring these themes: Why is language important? What is the impact of language? How do we experience language? What can we take away?

The Imposter Within: Understanding and Conquering Imposter Syndrome

Session 1, Session 2, Session 3

Imposter syndrome is defined as the persistent inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's own efforts or skills. While anyone can experience imposter syndrome, graduate students are especially vulnerable given the academic and life stressors they may encounter. In this workshop, Erin Barta from The Cincinnati Ethics Center will lead an interactive session in which: 1) imposter syndrome is defined, 2) participants identify examples of when they might have experienced imposter syndrome, 3) we offer tips and tactics to overcome imposter syndrome, and 4) we explore strategies to mitigate and prevent imposter syndrome for students at UC.

Mindful Meditation

Session 1

Take some time to relax your mind with this mindful meditation. Here you will have the opportunity to learn techniques of observing the breath and fluctuations for the mind.

QPR: Question, Persuade, Refer Suicide Prevention Training/Certification - UC Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Session 1-2

Become certified for two years in the evidence-based suicide prevention gatekeeper training, Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR). Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to understand mental health, recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis, and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Gatekeepers are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.

*Note: this is a double-session training, and both sessions must be completed for certification.

Psychological Safety

Session 1, Session 2, Session 3

Psychological Safety was coined by Dr. Amy Edmondson in 1999. It is a shared belief held by members of a team that it’s OK to take risks, to express their ideas and concerns, to speak up with questions, and to admit mistakes — all without fear of negative consequences. In this workshop, participants will learn the importance of Psychological Safety and how to foster it in the workplace.

Support for Neurodiverse Students at UC

Session 1, Session 2, Session 3

Join members of UC's Accessibility Resources staff to learn about neurodiversity. Learn some basics about neurodiversity, as well as strategies for coping with life with a neurodiverse mind. Additionally, information will be provided about support available at UC for neurodiverse students.

Understanding the Needs and Experiences of LGBTQ+ Graduate Students

Session 1 only

Presentation with an overview of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ college students with an emphasis on mental health concerns for LGBTQ+ graduate students. At the end, there will be a review of resources available at UC and in Cincinnati, as well as an audience Q&A.

Addicted to Numbing Mental Illness

Session 1, Session 2

Addiction and mental health often go hand-in-hand: 83% of people with substance use disorder also have a co-occurring mental health issue. But addiction goes beyond substance use, and behavioral addictions are on the rise. Hear from Dr. Christopher Tuell, Clinical Director of Addiction Services at the Lindner Center of HOPE, on the complex relationship between substance use, behavioral addiction, and mental health.

EMDR Therapy Primer for Health Professions

Session 1, Session 2

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a cutting-edge therapy and a first-line of defense for trauma response around the world. EMDR has incredible results with issues of PTSD, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and more. This session is designed for students in health programs to learn more about the EMDR process, it's efficacy and how it can be beneficial for attendees, their future patients and loved ones.

Mythbusters: Mental Health Edition

Session 2 only

It's almost impossible these days to scroll through TikTok or Instagram without hearing that everyone is a narcissist, everyone is gaslighting you, or that everyone is "a little OCD." It's great that everyone is talking about mental health a little more these days, but if your head is spinning with all the buzzwords coming at you, this session will help you make sense of it all. We will go over mental health terminology and dispel myths about what it all means; you will learn how to confidently decide which mental health accounts on social media you can trust to guide you in self-care, healing, and growth with science instead of sensationalism; and you will learn a few tips for talking about mental health more openly with others in your own life.

Power Based Personal Violence Dynamics and Responses

Session 2, Session 3

This presentation will cover the dynamics of power-based personal violence and what it means to offer Trauma-Informed-Care when working alongside victim survivors.

Beyond Borders: Nurturing Mental Health and Careers for International Students

Session 3 only

This session will explore the unique relationship between mental health and career development for international students in the U.S., focusing on nurturing resilience, support structures, and students’ holistic growth. We aim to bolster the mental well-being of international students, ensuring it becomes a cornerstone of their academic and professional journeys.

Understanding the Impact of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Keys to Resilience and Treatment

Session 3 only

This talk will review causes of stress, the impact of stress on the body and provide an introduction to PTSD. The presenter will talk about the biology behind PTSD and review the best treatments for PTSD. Myths and facts will be reviewed for reducing stress and receiving behavioral health care.

Self-Diagnosis: Dangerous to your Mental Health

Session 3 only

The incidence of mental health self-diagnosis is increasing due to misleading information from social media platforms, peers, television ads, and other unreliable sources. A panel of mental health professionals will present the importance of seeking assistance from trained and reliable professionals for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan to avoid unnecessary confusion or delay in proper care. Afterwards, there will be time for questions.
