CET&L Workshop: More Than Group Work: Techniques And Potentials Of Collaborative Learning
Collaborative learning strategies can considerably improve student engagement and learning outcomes. However, there are challenges to successfully implementing collaborative learning strategies – students may be apprehensive to working in groups, split up tasks and work individually, or the group effort may be carried by one or few individuals in the group. To optimize and fully reap the benefits of collaborative learning, teachers need to be equipped with specific strategies. In this interactive workshop, we will explore collaborative learning techniques that go beyond "group work", as well as strategies to purposefully implement them to improve students’ learning success.
Spotlight Sessions are 30-minute interactive workshops highlighting emerging issues related to teaching and learning in higher education. In partnership with the CET&L Graduate Assistant, a faculty member or graduate student co-facilitator will begin the workshop by briefly sharing their experiences with the topic of interest and then explore it further through open conversation with workshop participants. All participants are expected to be collaborative and active learners.

In this workshop, we will focus on jumpstarting the writing process, qualities of a strong writer, and critical components of strong academic writing. Key skills covered during this time are the writing process, academic integrity, citation skills and motivation.
